10 Slow Morning Hobbies To Change Up Your Morning Routine

Throughout the week, in the quiet hours of the early morning, when the rest of the house and world are still resting, I will shake up my slow mornings based on how I feel and what I need.

That’s why I love hobbies, you can pick them up whenever. So, ease into the day and try something different from your normal go-to morning routine with these slow morning hobbies.

Grab your beverage of choice and keep reading for simple and fun things you can do any morning to set the tone you need.

Let’s dive in!

1. Reading

The benefits of reading in the morning extend far beyond simple entertainment. It serves as a portal to other worlds, and the opportunity to awaken the mind and spirit, igniting creativity and wonder before the demands of the day set in.

This has to be my favorite hobby and while I tend to lean more towards fantasy / romantasy books, I do love a good self-development read. Grab one from your TBR (to be read) list and start turning those pages.

2. Stretching

Try not to overthink this. Allow yourself to flow and move in any form and shape trust that the body knows what it needs. If you need some inspiration here are 3 flows you can try.

The flows below can be 10 – 30 mins depending on how many times you flow through it. Try for at least 3x.

3. Doing a Puzzle

This may be old school but I love puzzle books and keep one stashed in the living room and pull it out on the mornings I need a simple way to engage my brain. You could also download an app on your phone or iPad.

3-1 Puzzle Book

  • Sudukho
  • Crossword
  • Word Search

4. Journaling

There are many styles of journaling. You have gratitude, mind dumping, conscious streaming, dairy, daily planning, prompted. If you’re unsure which may suit you try them all, one at a time. A go-to for me is conscious streaming. This is where you write with no effort to grammar, or punctuation, you allow the hand to record what moves through the mind.

This style takes practice and may take a page or two to allow the mind to open up but once it does you start to get into the juicy bits.

5. Brewing an Extra delicious latte or Bake

I mentioned grabbing your preferred beverage at the top of this post; but let’s be realistic, most mornings we have our standard Cup of Joe but today, for this slow morning hobby, you’re going to brew something special.

Add a little more love and pazazz!

  • Maybe you froth the milk
  • Add a dash of cinnamon on top
  • Try out a new recipe (Pinterest has great inspiration)

6. Going for a walk

Solo or with the pups, go for a stroll. Take this time to focus on full breaths and being present. You don’t have to go far; just walk out the door and go. I would invite you to leave the headphones at home.

7. Listening to a podcast or audiobook

Educational or fun. Pop in some headphones or turn on the speaker and binge out. This will allow for multitasking or just cozying up in an area and listening. My new and go-to podcast is Fantasy FanGirls.

8. Tending to your planet babies

If you have plant babies take one of your slow mornings and give them a good watering and dusting. If you did not know you can take a damp microfiber cloth to the leaves to help your plant babies grow.

9. Researching a topic

Grab your laptop or phone and research that lingering question or subject.

A few topics that I’ve been diving into have been:

Be wholly absorbed in the pursuit of curiosity.

10. Sitting outside and think

It really cannot get any simpler, though it may not be easy for all. And it doesn’t have to be outside but I’ll always vote for fresh air when possible.

Contemplation or introspection is a practice that encourages you to become more attuned to your thoughts, emotions, and sensations – to a greater sense of self-awareness. It can bring inspiration, creativity, clarity, and perspective.
