Slow mornings and morning routines are the duo we all love!
So here is a simple and effective way to enjoy both and begin that meditation practice you’ve been meaning to start. Grab your coffee or tea and give this 5-minute morning practice a try.
Yes, it can be done at any point of the day but I have found that the mornings are a blank canvas and the best time for us to observe ourselves before the day has begun its influencing. Keep reading for your self-inventory meditation practice 🙂

My favorite time for this practice is at the start of my day. I’ll make a cup of coffee then most mornings I’ll sit outside on the deck, other mornings the couch.
A Self Inventory practice is a practice for anyone who desires to build a meditation practice, learn how to show up for themselves, and are committed to increasing their self-awareness.
Having the ability to know how you feel, the quality of your state of being, and how you’re showing up in that moment gives you the power to choose. We’re not often aware of the sensitivity of others around us.
The idea with the self-inventory practice is that if you do not know what is yours you can’t know what is not yours. It’s important to check in to the layers of yourself and become clear on your sensations so when you are interacting with another you may notice when something comes up that was not on your inventory. When that happens, this practice will help you to not hold on or identify with this thought or feeling but rather just notice it.
You have your sensation state (feeling, emotion), your physical state (body), the quality of your mind, and even who you are preserving yourself to be. These states are each a part of the kosha (5 sheaths of the self). It does help to write this down as you move through the inventory this way you can revisit it if needed later in the day.
In time and practice, this should become a comforting habit to know where you are and how you’re showing up.
So how do you build self-awareness and tune in to yourself?
Here is your 5-minute morning routine to build self-awareness and soak in those slow life moments.
Self Inventory Practice
5 Minutes – Self Guided
Begin by finding a quiet space and a comfortable seat where you can close your eyes or soften your gaze and with little effort and little guidance begin tuning into each of your sensations.
* Physical, Mental, Emotional *
You’re here to witness and observe; so try to keep a gentle effort.
Things to pay attention to in your inventory practice:
Physical
What sensations do I feel within my body?
Do I have any physical discomfort or ailments that need attention?
Is my breathing calm and steady, or shallow and irregular?
Mental
What are the dominant thoughts?
What are the quality of my thoughts?
Is there one that’s been lingering?
Emotional
Do I feel energetic and vital, or do I feel drained or fatigued?
Are my thoughts influencing my emotions right now?
After a few mornings of adding this to your morning routine, you will begin to notice the dance of your energy. You’ll notice how we ebb and flow throughout the day and with even more time and practice you will notice that not all that we feel or experience is ours.
A self-inventory practice will enhance your ability to differentiate between your own experiences and external influences. It will also help you to not hold onto things as you move throughout the day.
If you are new to this practice then allow the questions to be simple.
Open yourself to honesty and vulnerability.
Allow yourself to witness yourself as you are.
Trust yourself to listen and observe what you are experiencing.
There is nothing fancy to this meditation or practice, it is as simple as sitting still and checking in. This meditation doesn’t require much; only that you observe and listen.
